In front of his family, onlookers, and VIDEOGRAPHERS.
Yes, in a popular resort area off the Red Sea, near Hurghada, Egypt, a young Russian man was first circled and then brutally eaten by a large tiger shark as he called out desperately for his father (presumably watching from the shore) and as some disgraceful pig filmed his death steadily on her phone while repeating “O Mein Gott!” several times. [Her grasp of the camera did not waver even once].
The young man was torn limb from limb in front of everyone, begging for help, screaming for help. “Papa! Papa!”
In MY day, a human being’s first reaction to such a horror was to jump in and try to save a fellow human, whether in a boat or just fuck the boat, dive in and swim to assist!
Things have changed. This #$@& filmed the man’s death steadily, without screaming for help, without dropping her phone in shock, in typical human distress, without turning this way and that way and seeking anyone remotely equipped to assist a human being eaten alive in froths of blood.
Was his father even present or was the young man screaming from a preternatural impulse? If the man’s father was nearby, I cannot imagine a father failing to rush madly to save his son.
What IS certain is that this woman filmed the whole horror fairly carefully and then she was most assuredly paid by several news outlets for her careful and casual documentation of the brutal consumption of another human being. Hopefully she will get what’s coming to her.
What would I have done? I’m damned sure I would have jumped in and swam to help a screaming human in such trouble. First instinct. Jump in and think about how to punch a shark later. Surfers and swimmers have done this for decades, without thought, upon seeing someone attacked in nearby waters. I have done this a couple of times upon seeing people caught in disastrous riptides while living in Florida. You help. You leap in when you see a person in serious danger.
What the living fuck has happened to our species?
Times have changed. Do NOT act as a human. Instead, film a human being’s dismemberment, first and foremost, and then sell your video to the press.
This woman will likely never be eaten by a shark, but she might be eaten by other things. May it be as it may be.
I reject and refuse this theme, this pervasive desecration. Human life is NOT cheap. I stand against this creeping evil.
But the general perception of humanity’s worth among our vaunted “civilizations” has become so trivial that I approach levels of galling despair.
[No tourist should be swimming or snorkeling in the Red Sea without supervision by local authorities and informed event organizers. Those waters are shark-infested and known to be so. This could have been prevented. Even if the Russian lad was drunk off his ass—always a possibility—supervision by local coordinators might be expected.]
