Not Shark Researchers Cherry-Picking Data AGAIN?

Whull, yeah. As a matter of fact, they ARE.

The manipulation of data is hardly anything new to the human experience (the manipulation of anything is hardly anything new) but this practice always rears its head when there is some pontification to be made in the realm of science or politics.

Juvenile great white sharks will often not bother swimmers and surfers in shallow waters because, according to their evolutionary development and instincts, they are on the lookout for smaller fish and undersea luncheon specials to consume. An adult human being on a board or in a kayak is a potential hazard due to its size, especially for a six or seven foot great white shark. These juvenile sharks are not in the business of risking injury for a meal. Their goal is survival to maturity, particularly given their status as the most apex of apex predators in their sphere.

Of course, when a great white shark grows to 15 or 18 or 20 feet long, no potential meal in the ocean is a “risk”. Collate some data on how many recreational water-babies go unnoticed our untouched when even one 16ft. great white shark is in the water, patrolling and getting a rumble in its tummy.

Get a grip, Ye evangelical marine biologists. Those of us with educated minds already know that adult great white sharks have a much different set of behaviors than the neophytes idling around the shallows of SoCal, looking for a ray or skate or turtle or bird or salmon to gobble. And we know these things from study that goes beyond Shark Week sensationalism (as fun as Shark Week can be, or used to to be.)

If you’re a human in the water with a hungry adult great white as opposed to a juvie, your chances of losing a leg or the upper part of your torso increases exponentially. Let’s see some stats on that variable. And don’t even get me going on Bull Sharks and what they’ll be happy to do with people of any size.
