Marine biology is endlessly fascinating to me, at least as much (if not more so) than astronomical study. As above, so below … but “below” is always a lot more complex and interesting and ALIVE than rocks and dust swirling about in unfathomable light years of endless, explosive revolution, like bits of crud slipping down the drain after a bath.

Earthwise, I am particularly intrigued when it comes to venomous creatures and the evolutionary quirks that led to the development of their often complex toxins. Venomous spiders and snakes rate high on my list of curiosities and occasional fixations, but various species of jellyfish are welcome to entice my interest as well. From the ubiquitous Portuguese Man O’ War agony-bubbles I used to see strung out on the Florida beaches of my youth after storms to the even more harrowing Marine Stingers and tiny irukandji box-jellyfish of Australian and Indian Ocean waters, the power of seemingly pointless blobs like jellyfish to inflict pain and death upon unwary human victims attracts my morbid synapses. How in the name of the Great Primordial Soup did these brainless squirts of Jello manage to evolve such potent toxins o’er the eons?

I don’t exactly lie awake at night wondering about it, but I do notice when these silent killers pop-up in the news. Especially when researchers discover a WHOLE NEW BREED OF THEM.
