Great asteroid strikes throughout history (and pre-history) have always captured my interest, whether the hurtling space-rock is big enough to extinguish dinosaurs across the globe or “merely” able to leave behind an impact crater the size of a lake.
One of the most fascinating incidents is the so-called “Tunguska Event,” which saw a comet or asteroid (or icy combo of both) explode over the remote, unpopulated woodlands of Siberia. The extraterrestrial chunk in that case was particularly interesting because atmospheric conditions caused it to explode a few miles above the doomed terrain, but the ensuing shock/heat-wave wiped-out the forests for hundreds of miles. Just imagine if the thing had made direct impact with the earth; scientists have estimated that the object was around 180 ft. in diameter. The fact that eyewitness accounts of the event were documented only adds to the eerie allure, for me.
If something the size of a small mountain ever hits us, say your prayers and kiss your ass goodbye, because the visible damage caused by a ball of ice and metal smaller than the average home of a B-List Hollywood “star” is enough to make your hair curl. Check out a nifty article about the Tunguska Event HERE. After that, don’t be surprised if you find yourself spiraling down myriad online wormholes devoted more intensively to this shocking and slightly enigmatic event.
