Some old guy in his 70s allegedly stole the famed ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in MGM’s 1939 classic, The Wizard of Oz. Apparently, he snatched them right out of the Judy Garland Museum in her hometown of Grand Rapids, Minnesota.

Whull, that kind of caper requires a whole heap of heart, brain, and nerve!

Deciding that, when it comes to such fabled footwear, there’s no place like home, “home” is allegedly where the sneaky codger took the slippers, and that’s where they seem to have remained for a few years, before the greatest heist since Brink’s was eventually cracked by intrepid gumshoes (no relation to shoes of Judy-ruby.)

I don’t know why, but I’m envisioning a depressed white-haired dude in a gingham frock, holding a wicker hand-basket, twirling and mincing gleefully in front of a full-length mirror as the ruby sequins of legend glimmer in the looking-glass reflection. Nearby, a Scottish Terrier with gout lumbers in distressed circles and barks weakly for his afternoon allotment of Beggin’ Strips.

“Hush, Toto! Can’t you see that Mama’s modeling her new shoesies?”

Of course, this would all be a wonderful and perfectly normal, cheerful tableau for any geriatric fellow enamored of Oz or of Immortal Songstress Clogs.

If they hadn’t been stolen.

Is there a famed movie prop YOU would pilfer if no one was watching and you had a chance to get away with it?

I would never steal anything, but if someone offered me the original staff used by Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings or the gryphon statue on Suzy’s front porch in Fellini’s Juliet of the Spirits, I’d not hem and haw. Any of the hogs in Easy Rider would do, too.

Cinema can cast a spell. Yes it can. Positively criminal, at times.
