Our surfer/water-sporting friends at Beach Grit can always be counted upon to provide some outstanding play-by-play reportage when it comes to harrowing shark attacks upon the recreational community.
THIS STORY involves the case of an unlucky/lucky paddle-boarder who met-up with an aggressive young Great White Shark while doing his thing at the mouth of the infamous Margaret River Estuary in Australia. The guy survived, despite taking a pectoral fin directly to the groin (DOH!) and it’s a pretty wild tale for fans of surfing and wanton sharkery, like me. It also underscores a fundamental truth about Australia: the waters are super spooky with sharks (and jellyfishy and crocodiles!) and you’re more likely to be eaten alive or stung to death in their Great Salty Seas than probably anywhere else on the earth, but Aussies (to their credit) have nerves of steel. Or maybe its just plain nerve.
[Look for Jonathan Kieran’s fabulous new—as yet untitled—book of hundreds of witty, cynical, zeitgeist-rocking, and knee-slappingly clever cartoons of Pure Smartassery in 2024! Stay tuned for developing news and previews.]
