In ancient times, the great metropolis of Alexandria at the head of the Nile Delta was not only the most glorious city in all of Egypt, it was one of the most sophisticated and mighty capitals of the entire world—Mediterranean and otherwise.
A series of grave topographical “issues” (increasingly silted-up harbors, devastating earthquakes, etc.) over the centuries have caused many of the glories of Old Alexandria and its neighboring communities to vanish beneath the sea. But fear not: intrepid archaeologists are not easily dissuaded from their curious inclinations. Everything from lavish temple structures to majestic religious statuary to shipwrecks filled with the splendor of a thriving trade industry throughout the Basin have been discovered in the fairly shallow waters off the present Egyptian coastline.
The glorious sea continues to give-up its secrets, much like disaster-stricken Pompeii across endless, glistening waves to the Northwest. In fact, remnants of a spectacular shipwreck are the latest wonders waiting to tell us more about life around the incomparably magnificent Nile capital and its environs, yielding a fulsome crop of information about the lives and livelihoods of those who built and maintained that extraordinary corner of the ancient world.
