FINALLY, the OG Legend and Queen of Outlaw music Jessi Colter returns to the game with her long-awaited new album, Edge of Forever, and the eponymous first single finds Colter at her country-funk, blues-rock, mystical, dazzling Americana best. It’s a sultry, psychedelic, and completely “Jessi Colter” piece of excellence. This is as fantastic as anything she’s ever done, from her classic 1970s Capitol rockers to her shattering 2006 Don Was-produced gem, Out of the Ashes and the striking, Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith Band)-produced, The Psalms.

For Edge of Forever (Appalachia Record Co.), Grammy-winning outlaw heiress Margo Price does the production work and, if this first single is any indication, Grammys should be flying to both Jessi and Margo. “Wise, sexy, groovy, in control, and roadhouse-grinding BOSS” is how I’d describe the single, but that’s always been the magic of Jessi Colter when she writes and sings her own, inimitable stuff. Colter is backed by Margo Price’s band on this project and if there is any starlight truly left in the music business, this album will get some heavy-duty attention. You don’t look aside when a legend like Jessi Colter is at her best. No way, baby. This blood and bone excellence. The new album drops October 27.
