Jonathan Kieran

WHULL, at present I have six major book projects “in the hopper,” as it were, many of them lavishly illustrated and all of them in various stages of completion or near-completion.

I am referring to this fecund period as the “home stretch” of my writing career. The rest of the 2020’s will constitute a very busy publication schedule for me. It’s daunting, yet it has also reached the systematic stage since much of the work is already finished.

After this period, I will be dedicating myself to my beloved woodworking hobbies and increasing seclusion. Ah, such is the soul and fate of an eremitic.

IF life and Earth’s Burgeoning Chaos do not intrude with too much obstinance after my present crop of works are completed, I may dabble with two or three “soul” projects in the literary sphere, but without any expectations.

I will be—Stars in Favorable Alignment and All Blessings in Full-Deluge—at the Buchmesse in Frankfurt in October 2024.

I’m not reading much of anything currently except for some superlative academic works, the latest by brilliant scholar Stephen J. Shoemaker, because I’m still in a fairly urgent creative process. Other voices prove intrusive. But I am looking forward to a period some time in the future when reading for pleasure (instead of writing) becomes a fundamental aspect of my existence once again.

Meanwhile, to wind-down, I am listening to the comic ramblings of the late, great Norm Macdonald on YouTube. I had long known about Norm but was not familiar with his work until discovering various compilations a few weeks ago. Deadpan comic styles and stand-up routines are like comfort food to me while I am in a period of creative ebullience. I don’t know why; my own sense of humor tends toward the sardonic, to put things mildly. But Norm is a welcome “old lump of coal,” as he described himself.

Writers. We often find our own oases of entertainment in the most unlikely places, don’t we?

Well. Back to bucking up. It’s going to be a frenetic next five years.

[Jonathan is busy writing and illustrating and finishing a whole slew of projects in preparation for upcoming major releases. Don’t expect a helluva lot of bloggin’ to get done unless something really strikes his fancy. Be patient. Marvelous things are on the way.]
