As a former longtime citizen of St. Augustine just up the highway, I can say that even the people in my hometown have long been aware that the waters off New Smyrna Beach have always been extra “sharky.” Whatever odd blends of breeding territory, weird currents, and/or bountifully toothsome selections of Grade-A Human Haunch converge in this particular spot, rest assured that the likelihood of bloodying the water with morsels of flesh, strips of skin, a hand, and maybe even an entire limb increase exponentially if you dip your carcass in the New Smyrna froth. It seems that most of the attacks taking place there are due to the activity of bull sharks and other, smaller species, but almost every time I read news about Florida shark “incidents,” NSB is front and center. I’d say that it’s well past time for the marine biology researchers over in nearby Gainesville to do some statistical investigation. I have a haunch—I mean, a HUNCH—that the results will prove revealing.
