Doubtful. But as many know, the ancient Egyptians were conquered and ruled by a line of tempestuous Greek monarchs appointed by Alexander the Great in the first few centuries BCE and Hellenic culture came to exert a mighty influence over Egyptian society, especially in the capital. Earthquakes and other natural phenomena led to the successive submersion of parts of the Nile Delta coastline over the centuries and many architectural wonders were lost to the waters of the fabled bay at Alexandria.
Some relics are making spectacular comebacks, however, due to the intrepid efforts of archaeologists and dive-teams. A temple dedicated to the native Egyptian deity, Amun, was recently found in the murky depths, along with a shrine supposedly consecrated to the Greek goddess of beauty, Aphrodite. “Treasures and secrets” may abound, but these findings do indeed require further study, since the Greek potentates were often careful to assimilate their gods with the corresponding deities beloved by the Egyptian populace. Thus, in ancient times, a temple dedicated to Aphrodite may just as easily have been considered a sanctuary belonging to Hathor, the Egyptian goddess of beauty, or to Nephthys, the seductive sister of Isis and Osiris, who was likewise regarded as a patroness of nubile comeliness and erotic revelry. Hey, these ancient divinities were never exactly who they seemed to be, which was part of their charm and allure.
Whatever the case may be, the fact that the Mediterranean is yielding as many lost wonders as the shifting desert sands is testament to the never-ending majesty of ancient Egypt and its colossal legacy to human history. Have a READ, my Egyptophile friends.
