There has indeed been a tragic new Great White Shark attack off southern Australian waters. A senior citizen and grandmother was out for a swim with a group of fellow locals who exercise in the shallows regularly. Reports indicate that she was mauled twice by a juvenile Great White Shark, sustaining a major injury to her thigh (oh, great whites strike first to immobilize when on the hunt for mammalian prey—it’s a determined and effective predatory instinct borne of countless millions of evolutionary “learning” years.)

Luckily for this victim, after first being bitten on her foot, a second, more gruesome assault upon her upper thigh did not sever a femoral artery. Equally “fortunate” is the fact that the shark was apparently a juvenile. An adult white shark would have almost certainly sealed her doom with a similar bite to that portion of the body. The good news is that rescue efforts were swiftly implemented at the scene and this Australian granny is now in stable condition at the hospital despite her serious injuries. Even so, there can be little doubt that her road to recovery will be arduous and fraught with terrifying days. Let us wish her well as she continues the fight for survival and hope that ocean-loving groups like her exercise club keep in mind that conservation has led to a pronounced increase in the populations of Great White Sharks around most of the globe.

Certain longstanding presumptions of safety need to be rethought when it comes to recreational use of the ocean by humans. Especially in Australia and South Africa. Godspeed, Madame!
