Appearances are not at all what they seem in so many facets of existence and we would all do well to remember it. Behold above—the lazy glory and splendor of a place like Monte Carlo, Monaco, and a smiling, handsome fellow traipsing about its majestic squares and harbors and observing its countless elite trappings. Monte Carlo, where the very air is filled with privilege and stalwart glamor. Alas, both city and traveler proved to be dead inside when this photo was taken, albeit for different reasons. I found Monte Carlo to be a whitewashed sepulcher, a gleaming facade filled with moldering corpses and whispers of the Ultimate Ruin. I would have sensed this even if I had not been in a torrid state of mind and personal conflict. I have never been back and shall never return. Fortunately, Paris was a day’s train ride away. More familiar haunts can chase away all kinds of newly discovered and unpalatable ghosts.
