Whull, Shiver Me Timbers. Bill Watterson Is Back

I shuffled out of bed this morning, fed the cat, made coffee, and settled in to wake UP when my mind turned idly to the beloved Calvin & Hobbes comic strip of yore and Always, along with its reclusive creator, Bill Watterson. There was no reason “why” my mind thought of the strip on this sullen California Autumn morning. I have always been a fan of Calvin & Hobbes, fully aware of its author’s lifelong Sasquatch status, but hadn’t contemplated the strip itself for a few years, at least.

Today, I did. Out of the blue. And I started a-googlin’ in that random, bleary-eyed way that helps a fellow rise and shine as the first cup of java is being consumed and the very idea of looking at the global news outlets is, as usual, an offense against all human taste and sensibility. Since all cyber roads lead (or at least post Red Riding Hood Granny Signs toward) Wikipedia these days, I found myself brushing-up on Watterson, just for a lark, in less than a minute.

I’ll be damned if that Comic Colossus didn’t release a brand new publication—his first in twenty-eight years!—only ten days ago. TEN FREAKIN DAYS AGO. What the ever-loving shite?

The new book is called The Mysteries and was written/illustrated by Watterson and caricaturist John Kascht. It’s definitely not Calvin & Hobbes-y, but why should it be? People expecting it to be a redux of that long-retired strip should probably be lobotomized. This new work is evidently dark and is described as an “adult fable”.

Am I going to get it? As fast as my Tiguan can spin its wheels to Barnes & Noble. It’s Bill Watterson sharing new art. Do you think I’m MAD?

Here’s a link to the new book at Amazon. Get thee hence, or get thee to your favorite brick and mortar peddler of fine volumes.

[Jonathan is busy writing and illustrating and finishing a whole slew of projects in preparation for upcoming major releases. Don’t expect a helluva lot of bloggin’ to get done unless something really strikes his fancy. Be patient. Marvelous things are on the way.]
