While Egypt is without question the most impressive place to discover the splendor of magnificent ancient civilizations on the African continent, it does not corner the market in awe-inspiring ruins, not by any means.
The ancient Greeks and, particularly, the Romans, left an indelible mark across the face of North Africa in exotic spots now largely forgotten by most travelers. While Egypt remains, for me, the most scintillating place to visit by far, colossal ruins and remnants of ancient wonder are found in some other tantalizing locales worth a look. For example, there are marvelous things to be seen in Libya, Tangiers, and Morocco. Volubilis is one of my beloved haunts and the vestiges of the great Roman city therein are indeed haunting in their isolated majesty.
If old stones with intriguing stories are your thing, a future holiday along the North African coast is something to keep in mind. The time may not be quite ideal in the present climate but let’s hope for better days ahead. Egypt, for example, is experiencing some of its best crowds in years as tourism enjoys an upswing and security has been as tight as a drum.
Keep these ancient marvels in mind, even as the world groans on and on with its usual noise and hullabaloo.
