There are several undersea zones known to be frequented by larger fish like Great White Sharks, Swordfish, Whale Sharks, and Tuna. For one, there is a depth called “the Twilight Zone” by scientists, which rests about 3,000-6000 ft. below the ocean’s surface. There is another oh-so-spooky depth called “The Midnight Zone” that occupies the 9000 ft.-deep strata of the Abyss.
Researchers acknowledge that these depths are, at certain times of any given year, largely occupied by vast numbers of smaller, prey-type fish and plankton species that are fed upon in droves by the swordfish, whale sharks, and tuna, but it appears these brilliant minds cannot figure out WHY the Great White Sharks—normally predators of fairly shallow coastal waters teeming with pinnipeds—dive into such deep waters themselves.
It’s all a stunning mystery, trundled out into the news cycles annually, and will never be fully understood … unless some billionaire invents a little imploding submersible to take eggheads down to have a gander for themselves.
In the meantime, I choose have recourse in the powers of deduction for the benefit of science and Earthly Knowledge Itself:
The Great White Sharks are diving so deeply to feed ravenously upon the big, juicy swordfish and tuna that millions of years of evolutionary experience have told them are ON THEIR WAY to the ALL YOU CAN EAT SMALL-FRY BUFFET in the Twilight Zone.
Let’s face it: they are headed down there to sun themselves.
