This a great news update from our friends at BeachGrit regarding Aussie surfer Toby Begg, whose story of courage and resilience captivated millions after a harrowing shark attack in August 2023. From reports during the Summer, it was obvious that Toby was a fighter in more ways than one: he pounded the relentless shark with his fists until it finally let him go, and apparently willed himself to survive the gruesome injuries sustained during the encounter. He ended up losing most of his right leg and the mobility in his left one, but just a few months later, he is being wheeled out to the scene of his brutal attack for a memorial paddle-out.

Cheers to Toby, a former construction worker with a wife and kids—this guy’s life has been horrifically upended, but he seems more than up to the task of survival against the fiercest odds. His story struck a poignant chord for me and I’m thrilled to see him in great spirits and getting on with the long journey of recovering his place in the world.
