I only utilize the above title for this entry because the intro for the superb new article about Great White Sharks in Toronto’s Globe and Mail states that “the increase of great white sharks in Nova Scotia waters doesn’t means divers and swimmers have to panic.”

I had to laugh at that. Why? Well, first because it is spiritually, physically, and existentially impossible for a Canadian—any Canadian—to panic in the truest sense of the word. Seriously. I mean, light one on fire and see what happens:

“Oh, look at this. I do believe I am possibly involved in a conflagration. My word.”

Second, Canadian beaches aren’t exactly teeming with bikini-clad beauties eager for a splash ‘n’ freeze or surfers paddling-out madly to “hang ten.” If you see a Canadian dip a toe into a lake during the hottest Summer you will be privy to the Nordic equivalent of a saucy burlesque show.

But some of the biggest, baddest sharks in the world do indeed patrol the chilly seas around Canada, and Nova Scotia in particular. In fact, for quite a while, the longest great white shark ever reliably measured (coming in at 20 ft.) was caught off Prince Edward Island in 1985, I believe. Subsequent Great Whites in the 23’ and 25’ ranges were since taken in Malta and Australia and researchers have made persuasive cases for the accuracy of their measurements.

But Canada grows ‘em big and the Globe and Mail always delivers good animal journalism, so take a look at what no native Canadian will ever be panicking about HERE.
