We’ve heard this song before from any number of classic American brick-and-mortal stalwarts. It’s an old familiar tune, filled with lyrics like “streamlining” and “restructuring” and “offshore alternatives.”

This is going to hurt a lot of folks starting out their 2024 adventures. Macy’s stipulates that the number of those to be sacked will constitute 3% of its work force and, I must admit, I was momentarily surprised that there were that many Macy’s stores still in operation in the USA, particularly given the “culture of rampant shutdown” that has been accelerating in my own state of California for years.

But then I recalled that most cities with populations of at least 100-300K have been able to harbor and sustain Macy’s stores. There is even one in little old Monterey, CA, after all. I haven’t shopped there in … nine years? My bad, I guess, but I don’t need mattresses, polo shirts, or fine cosmetics.

Here’s hoping that those Macy’s workers impacted by the downsizing will make fortuitous employment moves as matters unfold.

Ahhh, the vicissitudes of American commerce. And the lives of real human beings.
