In case anyone didn’t know, one of the favorite new genre buzzwords in publishing is “spicy”. Entire tables of “spicy” titles are proudly displayed at brick and mortar bookstores (if you can find such a store) and one can locate these hot tamale masterpieces of art quite easily online. Just type “spicy” into the Amazon search bar. And the “spicy” books can be blended with any other genre these days, e.g. “spicy paranormal thriller romance featuring non-binary paraplegics” and so on and so forth.
Most of it’s written by nitwits named Emily who are just out of their teens, with mush for brains, seeking the interest of bored-off-their-mondo-asses Chardonnay-swilling housewives in Beaver Creek. When the kids get home from the Indoctrination Centers and interrupt Mama’s dive into her latest “spicy” getaway, they’d better be ready or some serious bitchery.
The last time I ever heard anyone use the term “spicy” in reference to entertainment was actually in a book. A Confederacy of Dunces. Ignatius J. Reilly and his mother, Irene, were getting drunk in a sleazy New Orleans strip-club to avoid the rain and Ignatius was pontificating about one of his academic adventures when a blowsy barfly/stripper asked him, “You got a good story? I like me a spicy story.”
The story was set in the late 1950s/early 1960s. Drunken illiterate whores from N’Awlins used terms like “spicy.”
Now it’s a word your Mother or Grandmother uses to let her friends know about the latest bit of pulp porn she can’t put down, only the word “porn” will never be used, of course. It’s “spicy”. Like the pages of the book are sprinkled with a touch of tabasco. The way you might put a bit on your breakfast eggs.
“Spicy.”
