Most scholars of repute possess facility reading and writing in multi-languages. That’s one reason why they become scholars of repute. Certainly, the connection cannot be lost on the average academic. (Oh, it can be lost.) Typically, in the West, a scholar masters the ability to read, speak, and write in his or her native language. The ability to speak and write in one or two additional prominent languages fluently, e.g. English—the most commonly published scientific language on the planet—is pretty much a must. The ability to read (fluently) Spanish, French, German, and Italian are “unspoken” prerequisites in academic publishing. It is likewise frequent for a scholar who is worth being published in an academic journal to write competently in at least two of the above-mentioned additional languages, as well as English.

If a scholar does not have the discipline to study and master English, the most prominent Western academic language for international publication, then that can indicate—surprise!—a lack of discipline. This, in turn, can indicate questionable scholarly ability (certainly at the international publishing level) and possibly at the intellectual level. Our chances of “losing out” are thus proportionally slim. Then again, “peer review” is getting as soupy as everything else in This Troubling Hour.
