These types of attacks are certainly not common, and one would be inclined to suppose that the mountain lion in question was desperate with hunger due to injury, disease, or a difficult winter, but these predators are always out there. Watching. Waiting. When walking in the California wilderness (or suburbs, for that matter) rest assured that hungry eyes are upon you even if you don’t see them. Especially when the woodlands suddenly go silent in a stark way that makes the hairs on your neck tingle just a bit as you stroll along.
They are out there. They are thinking about it. Weighing the possibilities. Can they take you quickly? Are you in just the right spot for an ambush?
Carry a large walking stick, as I do. One preferably made of oak. And a hunting knife.
But if you get jumped and attacked first in the head—as is the mountain lion’s favored strategy—no weapon or reaction may avail you. Fight like hell if you can. And turn around frequently to look behind you as you hike. Mountain lions do not like knowing that YOU know they know about you.
Cats in general are not best pleased with that.
RIP to this young man and hopes for a speedy recovery to his friend. Prayers for the decedent’s family and friends as they cope with loss. The attack must have been brutal to an astonishing degree.
