Television advertisements for books and films have traditionally been banned from French small screens in order to prevent French viewers from being bombarded and their minds soiled by—you guessed it—disgraceful American entertainment ads for blockbuster crap.

I admire them for wanting to keep the purity of what rancid fumes remain from the Enlightenment, but it appears that they will now allow book advertisements to be aired, at least for a period of two years, so that the most insufferable bilge emanating from the cesspit of American literary houses might creep into their thoughts of incessant lovemaking and pain au chocolat.
