The fact that this Australian child even survived three bites from the coastal taipan is, quite frankly, a shock. The taipan species of Australian snake (particularly the inland taipan) are among the five or six most venomous serpents on the face of the planet. One bite from a taipan is enough to kill a grown man in less than 30 minutes—professional Aussie snake handler, Wayne Cameron, was killed by a taipan bite only months earlier. That a child was able to withstand three strikes is extraordinary.

The article does not go into much detail regarding the tragedy and the circumstances of the boy’s immediate medical treatment, but one must be convinced that a swift reaction by the toddler’s parents and emergency staff made all the difference. Moreover, severe damage has been done to this unfortunate child, leaving his parents and doctors uncertain about the magnitude of disabilities he will be forced to live with as he grows. Let us wish him well and commend his loving parents as well as all medical teams involved in his rescue and care. Terrifying.
