LEGO has released some extraordinary and sophisticated pieces in the upper range of their line of showcase architectural models at retail (Taj Mahal, Colosseum, Eiffel Tower, HOGWARTS, etc.) but this new, proposed approximation of an Egyptian temple leaves me wishing the brain-trusts at LEGO would head back to the drawing board.
For one thing, this depicts only the pylon (or monumental gateway) of a traditional Egyptian temple, and the figures intended to represent inscribed reliefs of gods receiving offerings on the front of the pylon look quite … inauthentic and clumsy. Moreover, they are sunken into the form of the pylon as if they were items in a shadowbox. That will never do. A better idea might be to impose an illustrative plate of reliefs that can be attached to the outside of the finished facade.
The posterior of the pylon is even worse. The hollowed-out effect makes it seem as if the interior spaces of the ancient Egyptian temple pylon were used as large rooms for worship and storage and a wide range of activities. They were not used in that fashion. They were generally quite solid with very tiny, narrow stairways leading to the rooftops of the structures. The entire “life” of an ancient Egyptian temple did not take place within the pylon, not by any means.
It has potential, but in my opinion it would be better to redesign things and create a model that allows for the forecourt, hypostyle hall, inner chapels, and holy of holies shrine. Charge $4K for it, LEGO.
You’d have at least one buyer. 🤚🏻
