And this is not a welcome one. At first, reports indicated that an Australian surfer’s leg was “nearly severed” after a Great White Shark attack but journalism is not yet completely mauled, apparently, for media sites are now claiming that the missing appendage “washed up” on the beach not long after the poor guy was bitten. How the “nearly severed” enters the equation is best left to the philosophers, I suppose.
Whatever the case, this kid is in trouble: stuck in serious condition in an ICU, doctors are fighting to actually reattach the limb that washed up on shore. Good luck with that daunting task, but stranger things have happened.
Water sports in regions known for Great White Shark activity.
Is it really worth it anymore, now that the numbers of these crucial predatory beasts have been restored to numbers comparable to shark populations before widespread human overfishing 60 years ago … when the worldwide “surfing craze” began to take hold, when the oceans were safer for human recreation?
It’s not worth it. Life and limb hang in the balance. Great Whites are back in healthy numbers and they eat mammals in their environment. Mammals like us. Tis time to reevaluate our hobbies.
