Kai Mckenzie, the rising star of Australian surfing competitions, who was mauled by a VERY aggressive Great White Shark over a week ago in Port Macquarie, lost his leg below the knee—the limb actually washed up on the shore after Mckenzie survived the attack and made it back to shore himself. Now, there’s footage of the apparent moment this young man suffered such grievous injury. The Sun published the video and, while not necessarily worthy of the “sensitivity warning” slapped onto the brief coverage (the famous opening scene in JAWS is far more disturbing), one can see Mckenzie trying to swim away from a determined set of telltale fins protruding from the churned-up surface. Yeah, it’s scary, particularly because the fins are very large for a supposedly 10 or 11-foot shark. A juvenile White Shark of that size can do some serious damage but in this case hunger may not have been the motive, since the limb was not consumed. Territorial display? Likely.

All of this underscores the new reality: shark populations are healthier than ever around most of the ecologically minded world. The sea IS shark territory and has been so for hundreds of millions of years. If humans are going to continue to participate in recreational oceanic activity that is not even 70 years old in terms of widespread popularity, they are responsible for any potentially horrific outcomes. Find a new avocation, surf at optimal times and in ideal conditions, or risk it, biscuit. Hope Mckenzie heals as quickly as possible and adjusts to life without a significant part of his body. He’s lucky to be alive, knows it, and says he is eager to get back in the water. Godspeed, mate.
