Taipan Strikes Aussie Toddler

Tragic story coming out of Queensland, Australia: a two year-old child is now permanently brain-damaged and likely to suffer further complications after narrowly escaping death due to an aggressive series of bites from one of the world’s most venomous snakes, the taipan.

The poor little mite was helping his mother feed chickens on their small family farm when he encountered the reptile on the property and was attacked. The taipan is known for the extreme toxicity of its venom, as well as its willingness to aggressively defend itself, and this toddler was bitten not once but three times, which is also typical for this species of snake when cornered. The effects of the venom are all the more dangerous for the elderly and the very young, so it is little surprise that this child, Eli, went into cardiac arrest as the deadly toxins took hold. Paramedics declared him dead for SIX MINUTES before finally managing to resuscitate him but doctors say he is forever brain damaged as a result of the envenomation.

This is a tough one. The parents of the boy are expecting a second child soon and one has to wonder about the outcome of reviving such a small young fellow after a six-minute stretch in which his heart had stopped beating, his lungs had stopped functioning, and no oxygen was able to get to his brain. But the human determination to help another person survive is strong, as we know. The medical team was probably relieved to get a pulse after such a long period of death. Now, however, the family will surely be faced with staggering hardships.

If anyone deserves good energy or prayers, it is this family. And we must remember—children can be remarkably resilient. If the boy survives, let’s hope for a miraculous medical breakthrough or natural progression toward recovery. A GoFundMe has been established for the family, which can be accessed via link to the main article.

Things don’t look promising, however. Taipan snakes are probably the deadliest terrestrial serpents on the planet. Australians are dear folk but, man, do they ever host some of the biggest baddies of the animal kingdom on and around their beautiful continent.
