I have my doubts about the new Andy Serkis-directed duo of upcoming LOTR films, even though they are being produced by Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh is once again on script-writing duty. The entire LOTR “universe” is being spread rather thin, with questionable results, of late. Some legacies (in this case Tolkien’s) are best left in the realm of masterpiece adaptations and the books themselves. How can we be certain that Serkis, as director, shares the same honorable vision that Peter Jackson upheld for the source material?

We cannot. Familiarity breeds contempt, and this world is rife with contempt as it is.
