Great White Sharks (among many other ocean predators and scavengers) hit the jackpot when a whale dies at sea and floats upon the surface of the briny like a giant, globulous salisbury steak in a gravy pan at your Grandma’s Assisted Living cafeteria. Ravenous sea creatures come from miles around, attracted by the scent of putrefaction that oozes along the underwater currents, eager to get a mouthful of that rotting blubber and do their share to complete the circle of life.
All the buffet-goers, however, make plenty of room when the Big Mamas make their inevitable appearance to take advantage of the ultimate “seafood special”. Great White Sharks get so big and girthy because they feast upon fat-rich aquatic animals like seals, elephant seals, and dolphins, but the oceanic aroma of a dead whale rings a dinner bell that cannot be resisted. The biggest Great White sharks in the world make a beeline for these tasty carcasses and gorge themselves into catatonic elation, even biting other Great Whites and predators hapless enough to be caught amid the frenzy. Most give the Great White Shark a wide berth, knowing that they could be part of a meal while eating a meal of their own. These all-you-can-eat jamborees are a jaw-dropping (and chomping) sight for tourists. In fact, a recent whale watching cruise in Southern California captured some striking footage of such a rare incident. Take a look at this 16-foot shark’s hungry maw and be thankful for terra firma.
