Heartbreaking news emerges from the waters off beautiful New Zealand as a young man is mauled to death by a Great White Shark while diving recreationally. From the reports, the fellow was not consumed outright and pronounced dead in a hospital after emergency transport, so the attack may have been territorial in nature. No word yet on the size of the shark or other details about the attack, though this information may yet emerge. Interestingly enough, the fellow’s distraught father insisted that his son, a frequent diver, had seen Great Whites before during his exploits but was “not afraid” of them. Tragic all the way around. Be sensibly afraid or at least alert, people, when entering habitats wherein YOU are not the apex predator. Indeed. Hearts and sympathies are extended to the family left behind. Weigh the pros and cons of your favorite hobbies—we only have one life and, contrary to so many nihilistic philosophies floating about our beleaguered society, that life is precious. Guard it as best you can.
