Rapunzel and her rappelling-level hair first gained fame via the Brothers Grimm. The theme itself is much older, however, and has been linked to ideas about old goddesses trapping young, fertile goddesses out of envy. (Well, no one likes to become obsolete.) Rapunzel’s name in the old German legend refers to a leafy salad herb, craved by a couple who promised their firstborn to a witch in exchange for raiding her garden. I have two questions: how sore was this lady’s neck after several princely visits and why hasn’t a company that manufactures rock-climbing rope named itself RAPUNZEL? Her golden locks always got the job done, after all.
