Perhaps Ridley Scott’s strangest endeavor as a director was the fantasy cult classic, LEGEND. The film is an incoherent mash-up of every possible fairy tale trope, but the cinematography remains stunning. Starring a young and woefully miscast Tom Cruise (what the hell?) the beloved 1984 mess features thrilling hambone turns by Tim Curry, Alice Pleyton, and a cameo by the sensual Meg Mucklebones with a badass manicure. Drenched in an ethereally chirpy/creepy score by Euro-synth pioneers Tangerine Dream, LEGEND still captivates over forty years later. Scott must need a stiff belt (or a potent spliff) before he watches this gem from his vaunted archive. If he watches it. Nevertheless, it retains a legion of devoted admirers.
