Lest we forget some of the more compelling enchantresses portrayed on film, hearken Ye back to 1998’s lavish, star-studden MERLIN miniseries, in which the titular wizard of lore (played by Aussie Sam Neill) was matched in magical magnificence by his creatrix and rival, Queen Mab. In this curious but compelling version of the Arthurian legend, Mab was essentially a goddess on-the-downswing, fighting to save the “old ways” of her followers from incipient Christianization and employing all manner of witchery to do it … not to mention engaging mortals in mischievous political plots and general intrigue. Played with unforgettable relish by the great Miranda Richardson (Tom & Viv, Blackadder, The Crying Game, The Hours, etc.), Mab is a Mistress of Mayhem to remember.
