Terry Pratchett on My Mind

Good heaven and all the saints within it—I’ll never forget the first time I discovered the work of British fantasy/satirical author, Terry Pratchett. (Sir Terry Pratchett, I believe). I was browsing in an archaic place called BORDERS BOOKS and MUSIC, which was an airplane hangar-sized store that once inhabited the lands of America, like dinosaurs did before they went extinct and became fossil fuel. BORDERS stores did not become fuel, just SHIRLEY’S GONZO BAD ASS HAIR SUPPLY! and so forth.

But I digress.

My first novel was published in 1999, in the flower of my youthful razzle-dazzle, and was rather a hit on the BORDERS circuit, but doing readings and signings at the stores also meant that I had plenty of time to browse the stores. I purchased a fantasy anthology and one of the tales included was a story called The Sea and Little Fishes by one Terry Pratchett. I recall distinctly not liking any of the stories I read in this anthology and was contemplating tossing the book aside, as one does when a volume does not “grab”. But I nosed my way into this short story by Mr. Pratchett and was (quel apropos) hooked like a fish at the lip. It was a story of rural witches competing in a magical showdown and featured two glorious figures who, I would discover, were monolith stars of the author’s glorious Discworld universe (oh, bother—I hate the modern tendency to call every creative enterprise larger than an essay a fucking “UNIVERSE”.)

Anyhoo …

In regard to Terry Pratchett’s creative oeuvre, however, the term “universe” was more than fitting. Inhabiting this universe and this particular story were Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg, two moral and semi-immoral witches (respectively) who would eventually open an entire world of enjoyment for me. Gateway sorceresses, if you will. And they were only the beginning of the wonders awaiting in the late Terry’s pantheon. He also made quite a rollicking, fabulous personage out of DEATH. See below and explore Terry’s work. If you have a hint of humor and heart, he’ll win you over.

(And screw APPLE products. The company is profitable but the people working for them should be lobotomized.)
