This is my Grandmother’s old, old, old, old Webster’s dictionary, which was kept in a corner of her 15,000+ volume library (complete with ladder for the monkey-like swinging of children fascinated by BOOKS and they myriad shelves supporting them). That dictionary, which weighed at least twenty pounds, was a Book of Marvels and Mysteries, containing words long forgotten and scrupulous references to source languages (German, French, Latin, etc.). A kid could get lost for hours in such a tome and one day even become, say, a writer. Moral of the story: trust your Granny’s taste in books if she’s got a big, labyrinthine, and possibly haunted house. Magnificent books tend to “gather” in such places.
