Rewatched Julie Taymor’s spectacular take on Shakespeare’s THE TEMPEST yesterday. I feel the film was not given its due, even though we must admit that faithful Shakespearean adaptations are hardly the stuff suitable for mainstream brains and levels of comprehension in this day and age. The casting of Helen Mirren as “Prospera” was a stroke genius in my opinion, and her performance is never less than riveting. Also mesmerizing is the talented Ben Whishaw as Prospera’s tricky spirit-servant, Ariel. Filmed partially on a Hawaiian island strewn with black volcanic glass, the setting is resplendent with magical ambience, reminders of the wrath of the earth itself, and the scenery, in general, exemplifies the battle between human forces of vengeance and betrayal so inimical to Shakespeare’s story. A stellar cast makes this a jewel for fans of the Bard or elegant fantasy in cinema. Julie Taymor has never disappointed me.
