Memories of Monte Carlo … which was visually resplendent but about as spiritually bereft and vivacious as a mausoleum. The entire place gave the impression of one colossal facade—a fortress unoccupied, a glamorous film set behind which nothing of substance was meant to exist. Thankfully, the visit was just a few days’ stopover on the way to sensual Bordeaux.
