Bittersweet news emanating from my old stomping grounds of St. Augustine, Florida—America’s Oldest City and still one of the best kept secret gems of the Southeastern USA. Gypsy Cab Company, a legendary little restaurant on Anastasia Blvd (on the A1A “curve” heading to St. Augustine Beach) is closing its doors, lock, stock and barrel.

After a marvelous 42 years in business, the time has come for owners and staff to move on. In its heyday, which lasted throughout four decades of operation, Gypsy Cab Co. was one of THE most popular and reliably satisfying places to enjoy the bounty of coastal seafood prepared with flair and creative innovation. It was a little bohemian, a little Southern, and a whole lot of delightful … a magnificent spot for a casual business lunch, a fun weekend gathering spot, or an atmospheric evening supper.

I had a lot of good times and great food with fine friends there—the stuff of which memories are made—and wish the owners and buyers (who will change the name of the establishment) much success amid the rich, comforting glow of the First Coast sunset.

Time slips ever away and the passage of a North Florida institution like Gypsy Cab Co. reminds one how brief (yet charming) our stay in the mortal coil can be.
