And yes, it’s a REAL enthusiasm in Japan. What it hopes to accomplish beyond any number of grotesque staph infections, corneal damages, and outright blindness is anyone’s guess. One has to admit, however, that the creative Japanese mind of the past forty years is a hotbed of sanity—exemplifying a serene approach to the daily challenges of avoiding existential boredom. Only the denizens of Berlin can rival them for demure restraint.
