But fans of classic folk-rock take heed, for there was [allegedly] darker work afoot behind the scenes when it came to the skyrocketing success of this unforgettable duo. Most completists recall that Judy (performing under her “maiden” name, Baphomet) got her start in show business with a popular Atlantic City act featuring her beagle, Asmodeus. Judy and the dog would perform tricks—often involving peanut butter and exposed orifices—in some of the finest cocktail lounges littering the boardwalk strip.

Then, one day, after a massive green thundercloud was seen pulsating over Judy’s cottage and yard trees began to dance widdershins around the property, neighbors recall that darling little Asmodeus had disappeared and Judy was found on her front porch, feeding a bowl of Alpo to the very man seen on this album cover. “Ken Steele” was the identity of this sudden stranger, according to the stricken and bewildered community, and marriage swiftly ensued. Rumors abounded, Judy’s Atlantic City act went pop, the duo went to the top of the entertainment world in meteoric fashion, and the beloved lop-eared beagle was never seen again.
