The worship of the ancient Egyptian goddess Isis dominated her native country for thousands of years but few people realize that she received one hell of a Hellenistic makeover (see above) beginning ca. 500 BCE. On the wings of that glow-up, she would become one of the most popular divinities across the entire Roman Empire. Temples were built to her as far away as London and her worship easily rivaled both state religions and flourishing mystery cults like Mithraism and Christianity. Jesus won the battle for souls, of course, but Mighty Isis did not go down without a fight—there is strong evidence that her worship continued in remote regions of Europe and Egypt well into the 7th Century CE. With the neo-pagan revivals of modern times, Isis is still worshipped to this very day.

It’s hard to keep a crafty goddess down.
