Memories of Monte Carlo. Things may look ducky from the photo but I hated the town. Don’t get me wrong: the yachts, promenades, restaurants, and general topography were all pleasant to the eye. But there was not a shred of genuine enchantment to be found in the place. It gave me the creeps. A town of the dead. An empty husk of gilded gold. It was easy (at least for me) to sense that this place was a “front” for the unimaginably wealthy to feign citizenship while living elsewhere and avoiding taxes. Hollow. A counterfeit. A facade void of depth and the abiding spirit that settles over and within any place that is inhabited by those who meet the dawn and the dusk, experiencing the years and flowing along with them with a sense of rooted belonging.
Besides, I have lived in Carmel/Big Sur, California for twenty years. I was already attuned to mind-bogglingly majestic coastlines and vistas.
Go to Biarritz. It’s lovely in many of the same ways but souls actually exist and flourish there.
