~The World of Rowan Blaize: Character Profiles~ by JONATHAN KIERAN
The realm of ancient sorcerer Rowan Blaize is one in which otherwise hidden worlds collide with (or dwell alongside) our own mortal sphere. Rowan’s existence is played-out across landscapes and dreamscapes that encompass “worlds within worlds,” providing the observant traveler ample opportunity to encounter creatures of dazzling magical qualities. Some of these beings are friendly, others are belligerent, and still others have a hard time deciding among the various options. From one universe to the next, certain things never change. Enjoy meeting the main characters of Rowan’s adventurous story in the profiles below and remember: wherever the world and whomever the wayfarer … only enchantment is immortal.
Character Name: “Mother” Blaize
*IMDb Dream-Portrayal By: Embeth Davidtz
Nature/Occupation: Sorceress and demigoddess. Mother of Rowan Blaize. Wife of Enoch. Younger sister of Ariadne.
Age: At least 5,000 yrs.
Background: “Mother” Blaize is a shadowy figure in the written account of Rowan Blaize … thus far. She is (perhaps deliberately) unnamed in the books, thereby adding to her mystique. Little is known of her background, except for the fact that she once dwelled (with her sister, Ariadne) on the Island of Aeaea, where she served as helpmate to the mighty goddess Circe. She was last known to be haunting a mountain range in North Africa, though for what purpose no one can say … yet.
Significant Traits: Mercurial and a bit arrogant, “Mother” Blaize is a potent spellcaster who never seems quite content with her surroundings. In fact, she may be the most restless member of the entire Blaize clan. Though she loves opulence and uses her magic to fashion homes and furnishings of exceeding splendor, she always abandons them soon after settling-in, leaving behind strange and often dangerous traces of powerful enchantments in her wake.
Unique Powers/Abilities: Mother Blaize appears to possess an aptitude for enslaving and commanding mighty servant-spirits to assist in the establishment of her many (soon-to-be-deserted) homes and palaces. She clearly has some skill for turning men into pigs, as well.
Classic Quote: “You’ve seen how these mortal establishments start off. Not worth haunting for even a week’s curiosity. Wait three hundred years or so, darling. If it ever amounts to anything, it will still be around then and likely much more interesting.”
Featured In: Book Two (Rowan Blaize and the Hand of Djin Rummy) and Book Four (As-Yet-Untitled)
*If I am ever fortunate enough to see Rowan’s adventures adapted for film or for the stage, this is the actor (or creature) I can most readily visualize playing the character in a given profile.
