There really is a town called “Spuds” and it has been #immortalized.

~The World of Rowan Blaize: Character Profiles~ by JONATHAN KIERAN

CHARACTER(S): The Hobgoblin Brothers of Spuds

IMDb DREAM PORTRAYAL by:

Um ... not sure who they are, but if they've got an agent and valid SAG cards, these dudes could definitely play two of the three "hobs" in any film or stage production of Rowan Blaize and the Hand of Djin Rummy. It would be a casting coup, for sure.

Um … not sure who they are, but if they’ve got an agent and valid SAG cards, these dudes could definitely play two of the three “hobs” in any film or stage production of Rowan Blaize and the Hand of Djin Rummy. It would be a casting coup, for sure.

NATURE/OCCUPATION: Hobgoblin siblings and monstrous gourmands/caterers par excellence.

AGE: At least as old as the American Civil War Era

BACKGROUND: The Hobgoblin brothers of Spuds are a triad of siblings who specialize in preparing exquisite culinary wonders that send the secret magical community of North Floridian foodies into fits of gastronomic rapture. Their talent in the kitchen does much to distract the immortal gentry from the fact that the brothers are extraordinarily ugly … even for hobgoblins. Never the less, legend has it that the hobgoblins looked so much like a set of human triplets living in the small farming-town of Spuds that, when these brothers died in the Civil War, the hobgoblins simply took over their abandoned plantation and posed thereafter as the ill-fated trio. With the help of goblin-magic and a great deal of privacy secured by patrolling alligators and other watchful beasts, the hobgoblins maintained the ruse for well over a century and no one was ever the wiser. Ugliness, apparently, has its merits in the supernatural sphere.

PERSONALITY TRAITS: Unrivaled work ethic, meticulous attention to detail, and incomparable discrimination when it comes to procuring and confecting the finest foods that magic can muster.

UNIQUE POWERS/ABILITIES: The Hobgoblin Brothers of Spuds have a (Nether)world-renowned and truly alchemic flair for bringing Thaumaturgical Fusion Cuisine to heights hitherto unattained. From impromptu werewolf bar mitzvahs to opulent soirees like the one Rowan Blaize hosted on Halloween night at the Castillo de San Marcos, these gents have the chops to make any supernatural event unforgettably delicious. To discover exactly what manner of devilish delicacies might grace a five-star hobgoblin menu, buy the novel.

We all have a “Swamp THANG” in the woodpile, I suspect. #literarycharacters

~The World of Rowan Blaize: Character Profiles~ by JONATHAN KIERAN

NAME: WarrowWize

IMDb Dream Portrayal By: Steve Buscemi

You can't get any swampier than the great Steve B.

You can’t get any swampier than the great Steve B.

NATURE/OCCUPATION: Dithering, Blithering, Nostril-Hair Withering Swamp THANG

AGE: 275 Years

BACKGROUND: WarrowWize obviously didn’t emerge ex nihilo from a bit of dead driftwood or a particularly gelatinous porridge of pond-scum. He had a rasping, wheezing, water-breathing Mama and Papa like any other humanoid lizard-man with amphibious characteristics and gills draped like mud-flaps across his collarbones. WarrowWize was somebody’s bouncing baby boy, at one time. How long he has been inhabiting his favored stretch of swampland along Old Moultrie Road in St. Augustine, Florida, is anyone’s guess. The evidence seems to indicate that WarrowWize is a Swamp THANG who likes to wander about and see what’s happening in the wider world, every now and then, so we cannot rule-out the possibility that he may have wandered into his current haunt from some other mucky locale long, long ago.

PERSONALITY TRAITS: Sloppy, soppy, with skin-folds floppy, WarrowWize is a gentle soul behind his decidedly grotesque and terrifying visage. He enjoys moonlit walks through woodland and town, so long as the weather is suitably and stiflingly humid. It isn’t easy maintaining a respectably slimy complexion while out of the brackish water, after all. WarrowWize is also a gregarious fellow, who, unlike most males of any species, is unafraid to stop and ask politely for directions if he finds himself lost on the way to a kickin’ party.

UNIQUE POWERS/ABILITIES: Canoe-tipping, alligator-wrestling and (Other)world-class spelunking.

SHINING MOMENT: Knocking at a human stranger’s midnight door to seek directions just as The Creature from the Black Lagoon was playing on basic cable. Timing is everything in worlds both magical and mortal.

A voice that could peel the barnacles from a boat. #literarycharacters

~The World of Rowan Blaize: Character Profiles~ by JONATHAN KIERAN

NAME: Dendara Cubbidge

IMDb Dream Portrayal By: Monica Horan

Hands-down, the gleefully goofy and girlishly glorious Monica Horan would be ideal in a cameo role as Dendara Cubbidge, banshee vocalist extraordinaire.

Hands-down, the gleefully goofy and girlishly glorious Monica Horan would be ideal in a cameo role as Dendara Cubbidge, banshee vocalist extraordinaire.

NATURE/OCCUPATION: Local manifestation of the Bean Sidhe (a freakin’ “Banshee,” okay?)

AGE: I’m getting the distinct impression (from my own mind, of course) that Dendara Cubbidge is an Irish immigrant at least a century older than the Floridian community to which she relocated … ostensibly to get out of the fogs and the bogs and embrace the steamy, sun-drenched groves draped with Spanish Moss. This would make her roughly 550, give or take a decade.

BACKGROUND: Dendara is, as mentioned, one of the Bean Sidhe and hails from some unknown woodland clime on the Emerald Isle. There, she presumably spent her salad-days honing various skills in the weeping, wailing, whistling, moaning, howling, groaning, and alerting-otherwise-unsuspecting-mortals-to-the-approach-of-imminent-death departments. Despite the mist-shrouded obscurity of her origins, we may deduce a couple of interesting things about Dendara’s milieu. First, it seems likely that she had an Egyptophyle in the immortal woodpile, since she is named after the Greek designation for the ancient city that served as the cult center of the love-goddess, Hathor, along the sultry banks of the Nile. Maybe Dendara’s mother booked a cruise and was inordinately impressed with the Land of the Pharaohs at some point in her harrowing existence. Who can say? Banshees deserve to benefit from top-notch travel arrangements and exotic experiences abroad like anyone else. It also seems probable that Dendara’s particular branch of the Sidhe was one that boasted significant musical inclinations–at least when it came to inclinations above and beyond the entirely work-related “Primal Scream” mode of vocalizing.

UNIQUE POWERS/ABILITIES: As the lead singer in her namesake “Dendara Cubbidge’s Banshee Band,” Dendara could sing like no other denizen of the magical community in sleepy, witchy, ghostly St. Augustine, Florida. Her multi-octave range was said to have the power to smash windows as thick as the ones guarding the bloated patrons in Dunkin’ Donut restaurants along San Marco Avenue and could likewise, at its zenith, peel the barnacles right off the boats as they bobbed in the idyllic bay. Residing, it is said, just outside St. Augustine in the town of Elkton, where she was apparently active in the parish church of St. Ambrose (would you expect anything less of a good Irish Catholic Sidhe?), Dendara’s exquisite musical stylings were accompanied by an incubus from Palatka and a druid hag from Anastasia Island, who played the sawgrass-flute and an ogre-ivory keyboard, respectively. One presumes this uber-hip trio never had trouble packing any joint in the metaphysical sphere along Florida’s First Coast.

SHINING MOMENT: If warlock Rowan Blaize hired Dendara and her band for his de rigeur All Hallow’s Eve gala, you know they were as satisfying as the roasted echidna scales that the caterers were dishing-out.

“It’s all in the wrist.” Just ask ‘Cammi’ from #Sideways. #beinmymovie

~The World of Rowan Blaize: Character Profiles~ by JONATHAN KIERAN

The realm of ancient sorcerer Rowan Blaize is one in which otherwise hidden worlds collide with (or dwell alongside) our own mortal sphere. Rowan’s existence is played-out across landscapes and dreamscapes that encompass “worlds within worlds,” providing the observant traveler ample opportunity to encounter creatures of dazzling magical qualities. Some of these beings are friendly, others are belligerent, and still others have a hard time deciding among the various options. From one universe to the next, certain things never change. Enjoy meeting the main characters of Rowan’s adventurous story in the profiles below and remember: wherever the world and whomever the wayfarer … only enchantment is immortal.

Character Name: Ona

*IMDb Dream-Portrayal By: Missy Doty

Missy Doty played the hilariously naughty waitress, 'Cammi,' in Sideways, one of my all-time favorite films and I have since seen her in a number of compelling guest spots ranging from the Law & Order franchise to American Horror Story. Missy definitely has the chops as a character actress to play the small-but-crucial role of 'Ona' in an adaptation of my novel, Rowan Blaize and the Starbane Exile. "It's all in the wrist ... isn't it, Cammi?"

Missy Doty played the hilariously naughty waitress, ‘Cammi,’ in Sideways, one of my all-time favorite films and I have since seen her in a number of compelling bit parts ranging from the Law & Order franchise to American Horror Story. Missy definitely has the chops as a character actress to play the small-but-crucial role of ‘Ona’ in an adaptation of my novel, Rowan Blaize and the Starbane Exile. “It’s all in the wrist … isn’t it, Cammi?”

Nature/Occupation: Mortal woman, wife of the woodland huntsman, Rufthar.

Age: Late 30s – Early 40s (Though the rigors of life have left Ona a bit weathered and worn beyond her years.)

Background: Ona is a sturdy huntsman’s wife and the most formidable woman in Rufthar’s Camp, where she and her family have taken refuge against the rising forces of evil that plague their home city, Pyr Mida. Life is difficult for Ona in the brutal winter of the Kelnian forest, but she is a no-nonsense woman of sterling character who can hold her own with the best of the men in their backwoods refuge.

Significant Traits: Plump, plain, pious, pragmatic and hardened by the tribulations of the world, Ona’s existence as wife of Rufthar and mother of Wylla is one filled with only a few simple joys and much toil, but she is ever up to the challenge. In a world dominated by the fell powers of Queen Oblixta, women like Ona have suffered unspeakable losses and the sting of oppression, always looking over their shoulders to see from whence the next horror or betrayal might emerge. They must be ready for almost any eventuality, but the austerity of life at the hunting-camp–combined with the ferocity of the elements–is enough to forge everyday heroes of considerable mettle. Ona is one such person.

Unique Powers/Abilities: Redoubtable Ona is actually a much more complicated soul than she herself realizes or is willing to reveal, even to her loved ones. She also appears to work much harder, all things being equal, than her mighty husband, Rufthar. Whether curing the meats, tanning the hides, chopping the firewood or brewing the ales that sustain their lives in the wilderness, Ona channels her strength toward daily survival. There is still room in her motherly heart, however, for pivotal acts of kindness that might just help to tip the balance in the ultimate battle of Good against Evil.

Classic Quote: “Drink a sip or two, Gremm of Tythnia, or you won’t be fit to walk across the room. You lost a lot of blood in your calamity with those devil-wolves, and blood takes a body some time to replace.”

Character Name: Bryn Tramayne

The petite, sweet and lavishly gifted Kristin Chenoweth is a dead-winger … er … ringer for my faery queen, Tramayne, in Rowan Blaize and the Starbane Exile.

Nature/Occupation: Faery Empress of the Kelnian Woodlands near Caltressia

Age: Thousands of Years (“Older than the hills” is not far off-the-mark for this immortal Lady)

Background: Bryn Tramayne is the Sovereign, Empress and all-around Queen of a woodland empire of fey creatures somewhere in the Northern kingdom of Kelnia, though she is hardly associated with the mortal comings, goings and concerns of that particular nation. Within her magical domain, deep in an enchanted forest, Tramayne rules with a tiny but powerful fist, responsible for the protection, management and prosperity of her subjects, which include faeries, gnomes, pixies, dryads, nymphs and even the various forms of non-magical wildlife that dwell within her sacred realm.

Significant Traits: To the mortal eye, beautiful Bryn Tramayne is only six inches tall, clad in a gown of iridescent splendor and carried through the air on a set of wings more dazzling than those that belong to any creature under the heavens. She is wise, just, and compassionate, but, as a creature more ancient than the forest itself, she is also mighty and terrifying in her own fashion. Petulant, witty and/or condescending remarks are hardly beyond the scope of Tramayne’s enigmatic personality. She is an Empress, after all.

Unique Powers/Abilities: As a faery chieftain, Bryn Tramayne is far more skilled in magic than the myriad of clever subjects who have recourse to her in times of crisis or conundrum. Tramayne’s command of primordial spells and the complex rituals associated with faery magic remains unrivalled by all but the most cunning and masterful sorcerers who inhabit the various kingdoms of the world. She has battled and defeated many intimidating foes in her day, but even a Queen can be deceived … if she allows a passionate concern for her people to cloud the royal sensibilities.

Classic Quote: “I’m not interested in any of your so-called ‘accomplishments,’ you desiccated hag. And for the record, I’m not remotely concerned with issues of your personal fulfillment.”

I know it’s warped. I know it absolutely. But I would have loved to see the late, great Edith Massey play the Galwyn Crone in an adaptation of my Rowan Blaize Starbane novel. Just for the sheer, hilarious insanity of it all.

Nature/Occupation: Immortal Monstrosity. Pseudo-Sorceress

Age: Hundreds of years, if not thousands.

Background: The Galwyn Crone’s origins are shrouded in both Kelnian and Corydian legend, but even the mention of her name is enough to raise the hairs on the back of the sturdiest warrior’s neck. A flesh-eating sorceress of utterly repulsive bearing, she supposedly battled with a great dwarf-king named “Mandulis” and, triumphant, stole his magic staff. Uh huh. Thereafter the crone holed-up in a series of loathsome caverns in the rocky Galpern Valley and established there a shrine … to herself. All those who sought her magical assistance (made even more formidable by the Staff of Mandulis) were granted their desire … provided they brought along certain delectable sacrifices as payment.

Significant Traits: Gargantuan, pustulent, filthy, and utterly untrustworthy, the Galwyn Crone is also blind, but that is hardly an impediment. Her sense of smell and magical intuition are virtually without peer in her world, and that makes her almost unbeatable.

Unique Powers/Abilities: With the Staff of Mandulis, the Crone is Mistress of virtually every worthy Enchantment … except the restoration of her own sight and the ability to clean up her rancid cavern dwelling.

Classic Quote: “We smell arrogance!”

In a film or stage adaptation, the fantastic Russell Crowe could play the gnarly and wicked General Kerrion, who appears in my novel, Rowan Blaize and the Starbane Exile, without the need for any Method Acting whatsoever. Unadulterated, free-form volatility. What can you say? It’s a gift. He’s got it.

Nature/Occupation: Human warlord and leader of Queen Oblixta’s Dark Army

Age: 35

Background: General Kerrion, who stands at the right hand of sorceress-queen Oblixta to do her bidding and direct her massive military forces, had a humbler origin in terms of his murderous career. Oblixta discovered Kerrion at the head of a small army in the walled Kelnian city of Nargos, where he served the local Lord, Cabrisius. Recognizing his potential for cruelty, the up-and-coming witch put a spell upon Kerrion and together they assassinated Cabrisius, increasing the size and scope of her dominion. When Oblixta gathered enough military might and magical aptitude, she next launched the great attack upon her parents at Castle Cadrach, with Kerrion as Commander and General of her legions.

Significant Traits: A man of few words and much wretched thought, Kerrion needed no spell or charm to summon cruelty in his soul; there has always more than enough of that to spare. His abilities as a merciless fighter, cunning strategist and uncompromising leader have proved indispensable to Queen Oblixta, and she commands not only his loyalty but his deep-seated fear. Whether his dedication to evil shall reap the reward he truly desires in the long-run is, however, another matter entirely.

Unique Powers/Abilities: Military prowess. Unmitigated cruelty on the battlefield and in more “personal” interactions, too.

Classic Quote: “How could you have dealt with me so? I have served you long and faithfully. What are you planning now in your wickedness?”

Featured In: Book Three (Rowan Blaize and the Starbane Exile)

Book Three = The next novel that finds Rowan trapped by a spell in another world, caught between a faery-squashing sorceress who’ll stop at nothing to conquer the kingdom … and a feisty teenage prince who’s determined to get it back.
