~The World of Rowan Blaize: Character Profiles~
The realm of ancient sorcerer Rowan Blaize is one in which otherwise hidden worlds collide with (or dwell alongside) our own mortal sphere. Rowan’s existence is played-out across landscapes and dreamscapes that encompass “worlds within worlds,” providing the observant traveler ample opportunity to encounter creatures of dazzling magical qualities. Some of these beings are friendly, others are belligerent, and still others have a hard time deciding among the various options. From one universe to the next, certain things never change. Enjoy meeting the main characters of Rowan’s adventurous story in the profiles below and remember: wherever the world and whomever the wayfarer … only enchantment is immortal.
Character Name: Mechthilde Frikk
*IMDb Dream-Portrayal By: Penelope Cruz

Penelope Cruz possesses the raw, steamy, sourced-from-the-earth sensuality to play a half-breed swamp-spirit, guardian of the ecosystem, as embodied by Mechthilde Frikk in my novel. And Penelope wouldn’t have to utter a single word. That’s another bonus.
Nature/Occupation: Elemental Half-Breed Spirit
Age: 150 yrs.
Background: Mechthilde Frikk was known by the magical inhabitants of St. Augustine as the “Swamp Beldam” because she was, in fact, the offspring incarnate of a passionate affair between a mortal hermit and the Doomwater Swamp itself! Abandoned by her father, Mechthilde is the guardian and personification of her swampy terrain, which needs her more than ever due to the scourge of pollution and greedy human developers. Mechthilde is a good friend to few, but has been known to invite Gert Gokey and Serenity Turnbull over for a cup of something hot and muddy, now and then. She also honored Rowan Blaize with an unexpected appearance at his All Hallow’s Eve party at the Castillo de San Marcos.
Significant Traits: Generally naked or barely clothed, Mechthilde is ravishingly beautiful but not easily approached by humans. Reputedly born of from the center of a rotted and submerged oak, she dwells exclusively in her beloved swamp and tends passionately to its fragile ecosystem.
Unique Powers/Abilities: Mechthilde is not a sorceress by any means, but as the half-child of an elemental spirit she is, in some respects, as powerful as a deity. She can command and manipulate all the natural forces within her marshy domain, but beyond that sphere her power is necessarily limited. When attending Rowan Blaize’s Halloween bash, she arrived across the waves of Matanzas Bay on a driftwood raft towed by two fifteen-foot bull alligators.
Classic Quote: “This okra is a bit overcooked.” (Overheard by a surviving guest of Rowan’s fateful All Hallow’s Eve Party.)
Featured In: Book Two (Rowan Blaize and the Hand of Djin Rummy)
*If I am ever fortunate enough to see Rowan’s adventures adapted for film or for the stage, this is the actor (or creature) I can most readily visualize playing the character in a given profile.

Escape the Imminent Collapse of Civilization, Friends, if only for a few hours. A sweeping modern fairy-tale is born with the Rowan Blaize series of books. Click on the book covers to the right or have a look below …
Book One = The magical cornerstone – a lavishly illustrated epic narrative poem … a genuine “spell” for the young and young-at-heart to treasure for a lifetime, telling the story of sorcerer Rowan Blaize’s battle to regain his magic powers. (Think Beowulf-meets-Dr.Seuss or an epic story-in-verse of a scope similar to Tolkien’s soon-to-be-released The Fall of Arthur, only contemporary.)
Book Two = The rip-roaring novel that continues the adventures of Rowan Blaize and introduces the three hilarious witches of the Ancient City, along with its dysfunctional werewolves, wraiths, ghosts, vampires, dryads, banshees and a beauty pageant brat that might just destroy the world.
Book Three = The next novel that finds Rowan trapped by a spell in another world, caught between a faery-squashing sorceress who’ll stop at nothing to conquer the kingdom … and a feisty teenage prince who’s determined to get it back.
