I know why #Parisians stay so enviably skinny, but it doesn’t make me any less hungry.

An outstanding new French bakery/patisserie/café opened recently in ‘The Barnyard’ shopping & arts center of Carmel, California, only a few winding miles away from my door, and I think these industrious cooks are going to be a big fat hit, even as they help make the local population big and fat … period. The name of the shoppe is Lafayette and they specialize in freshly created EVERYTHING, from delicate crème-filled macarons of alluring pastel hues to croque monsieur sandwiches and earthy little pizzas. Their bread selection (croissants and pain au chocolat included) is nonpareil, along with the rest of the fare, and part of the reason for such excellence can be attributed to particularly meticulous attention to detail, not to mention the fact that they import all of their butter and flour directly from France. Holy Arc de Triomphe, Batman!

Get those elastic pants out of the closet--there's a new French bakery in town and they know what they're doing.

That, dear friends, is a.u.t.h.e.n.t.i.c.i.t.y. up at the sharp end.

One will not find more exquisitely crafted or tasty treats in any Parisian atelier and you can believe me, because I have lived and eaten in Paris. Extensively so. Make no mistake about it: the good people at Lafayette (French-speaking and French-born) had better get settled-in for a nice, long stay. If I know anything about my own weakness for such comestibles, then I could conceivably keep them in business single-handedly. Never the less, I’ll have to take a number, like everyone else in line.

Behold a mere sampling of the gastronomic selections on display at Carmel's newest (and finest) French bakery/patisserie/café.Feel free to lick the screen of your monitor, iPad, or smartphone. You'll gain a lot less weight that way.

My most recent visit to Lafayette also reminded me why Parisians are so uniformly and effortlessly skinny, even though food this scrumptious is never more than a block away from any of them and (in general) they don’t exercise anywhere near as often and as furiously as I do. The answer? Parisians will be content to savor one or two of those little macarons seen on the right in the photo above, whereas I must eat five, along with a tartlette framboise, a beignet au pomme (if steaming hot & fresh out of the oven) and at least one custard-spewing Napolean in a single sitting.

I think that makes a difference when it comes to trepidation about stepping on the bathroom scale. Oink. Oink. Bonne chance, mes nouveaux amis au Lafayette!

Watch the Rowan Blaize Book Trailer HERE.

Book One = The magical cornerstone – a lavishly illustrated epic narrative poem … a genuine “spell” for the young and young-at-heart to treasure for a lifetime, telling the story of sorcerer Rowan Blaize’s battle to regain his magic powers. (Think Beowulf-meets-Dr.Seuss or an epic story-in-verse of a scope similar to Tolkien’s soon-to-be-released The Fall of Arthur, only contemporary.)

Book Two = The rip-roaring novel that continues the adventures of Rowan Blaize and introduces the three hilarious witches of the Ancient City, along with its dysfunctional werewolves, wraiths, ghosts, vampires, dryads, banshees and a beauty pageant brat that just might destroy the world.

Book Three = The next novel that finds Rowan trapped by a spell in another world, caught between a faery-squashing sorceress who’ll stop at nothing to conquer the kingdom … and a feisty teenage prince who’s determined to get it back.
