Wide Open Country has compiled quite an assemblage of varmints for their latest treatment of the ongoing “outlaw” country music phenomenon that ostensibly began in the late 1960s and hit critical mass in 1975 and 1976 with the rise of million-selling crossover artists like Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Jessi Colter. The so-called “movement” gave the appearance of fading not too long after that watershed, slipping beneath the heavy surface currents of “countrypolitan” sounds (think Barbara Mandrell, the Urban Cowboy craze, etc.) but, in fact, the genuine musical renegades have continued to ply their wares to this day. Music fans, have a gander.
