Yes, yes, the world needs another Godzilla movie like it needs another gazillion-dollar comic book tentpole extravaganza written by twenty-two year old cognitively dissonant ADHD graduates of Dissociated U.
But THIS Godzilla movie, Godzilla Minus One (whatever the hell that’s supposed to signify), is being made by the Japanese, who are upping the stakes in terms of special effects and production value bombast in order to compete with the American series of eardrum-withering “Monsterverse” mediocrities that have accosted already bedraggled human intellects for nearly a decade already.
Plus, the Japanese are going back to the Gordion Godzillian roots to explore the stark terror and chaos of the post-WWII cultural and infrastructural trauma that inspired the first rubber-suit/puppet Lizard Lord to rise from the depths.
In other words, they are remaking the original cheesy-but-creepy Godzilla film with every ounce of POW at their disposal.
And early buzz is off the charts.
Godzilla has become a global mainstay and signpost of cultural reference (“iconic”—blechhhh) for many assorted reasons that shall not be delineated here, believe me, and who knows if the “buzz” surrounding the upcoming Japanese movie is just a lot of overblown fanboy speculation of the hopeful variety or sheer studio promo windbaggery—you can’t believe a THING that emerges from any form of major or minor media in this days, NOT A THING—but if one is a fan of the Big Green Boss with Nuclear Halitosis and some creative outlet is really and truly situating his story back into its original context, i.e. humanity’s propensity for absolute destruction of itself and the planet, then this film just might reignite Godzilla’s dignity somewhere above the level of cartoonery.
But don’t get your hopes up. All of the subsequent Godzilla movies and reimaginings have been shit. Often likable, goofy shit, but shit nonetheless.
