This fisherman was humbled and harrowed when he managed to catch a Great White Shark from the beach after a day of casting his line near Amelia Island, Florida. The 10-ft juvenile specimen was definitely a beauty and was safely released back into the ocean after appropriate photos and footage were secured. To be certain, the images are worth seeing—the shark is a sleek beauty and the fisherman’s face has an undeniable “I can’t believe I did this!” aura.
The article indicates that Great White Sharks are “rare” along the North Atlantic coast of Florida. It may indeed be rare to catch them by line, but the Great White is no stranger to those waters. I hail from Florida’s First Coast and can guarantee you that Great Whites are frequently passing through the region. Large specimens have even been documented, including a 20ft. Great White cruising along in thirty feet of water off the coast of Vilano Beach in the early Aughts and, in 1987, before Great Whites were a protected species, some deep sea fishermen strung-up a monster 17ft. Great White down at the docks in my own St. Augustine. Front page news of a sad sort.
Beware—the next time you vacation in Florida and dip your toes in any natural body of water, you be contending with sharks of every kind at the beaches, alligators in ponds (even at Disneyland!), and pythons in the Everglades. Enjoy your swim in serenity. 😁
